Industrialized Construction (IC) is widely known as the convergence of industrialization and software solutions to enable an end goal of mechanization and systemization in the construction industry

Through integrating innovative techniques, processes and technology, components are manufactured in controlled environments. Once manufactured, components are transported to the final location and assembled. Leveraging the many synergies of manufacturing, a notable increase in speed and scalability is achieved from design through manufacturing and construction. The upside of building this way is enormous, build schedules can be cut in half, key parts of the process can be automated, and schedule and quality control is drastically improved when ad-hoc site conditions are removed.

In IC, scalability is achieved with seamless integration between a Kit-of-Parts platform and a technology platform.

In a Kit-of-Parts platform, buildings are treated as a product platform and must address a wide amount of variation that the market demands. The focus is on developing, iterating and refining reusable components that can be mixed and matched to design, and create a wide variety of buildings. These components are designed for manufacturing and ease of assembly on site or DfMA. 

Beyond DfMA, a Kit-of-Parts is designed for flexibility, automation, and usability. As you might imagine, managing a Kit-of-Parts at the scale and complexity of a building creates an opportunity for data management. This powerful approach allows you to design and engineer rapidly with immediate feedback on cost and schedule and effortlessly manage that dataflow through manufacturing and construction.

To fully achieve scalability, IC also needs a technology platform that allows all users within a system, to contribute to the dataflow while simultaneously benefiting from other user’s data. This data-centric connected workflow should start upstream and flow from design through to construction. In this data-centric workflow, data standards make interoperability between all of these systems and components possible.

This data-centric workflow unlocks automation across the process stack from design to factory eliminating manual effort wherever possible. The soft production deliverables including construction documents, shop drawings, permit sets, engineering calculations, and detailing of repetitive building elements consume tremendous amounts of the cycles of highly skilled professionals.
